HEREDITARY SPASTIC PARAPLEGIA
Redefining Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia (HSP) neurorehabilitation
Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia can affect the nerve pathways that carry signals between the brain and the legs, often causing progressive stiffness and weakness. Our programme supports brain-body communication, whether you were diagnosed recently or many years ago.
We work with a wide spectrum of symptoms, from mobility challenges, stiffness/spasticity or drop foot, gait, co-ordination and balance issues.
Our approach, grounded in sport science and performance methods, aims to improve reduced muscle control and rebuild strength. We combine technology and training to achieve leading results.
We work with:
-
-
Clients whose goals are to improve their mobility, strength, balance and stamina
-
Under-active muscles and reduced muscle recruitment / control
-
Leg weakness, particularly affecting the hips, thighs and lower legs
-
Spasticity, stiffness and altered muscle tone
-
Drop foot, toe-walking and difficulty clearing the feet when walking
-
Walking pattern, balance and gait issues
-
Hand and upper limb function, where affected
-
Individuals in the early stages after diagnosis who want to proactively maintain and build function
-
Individuals living with long-term effects who feel they have reached a plateau

WHY TRADITIONAL METHODS FALL SHORT
Many of our clients with HSP have been told that as the condition is progressive, that the focus should be on managing or learning to live with the symptoms with very little options for interventions to improve mobility, strength and balance.
We take a different view: we believe function and strength can still be built, and that with the right approaches and mindset, progress is possible. Unlike many traditional programmes, our approach targets motor function and neuromuscular communication, aiming to improve muscle control and with time and training, improve strength and muscle control. Rather than focusing only on symptom management, our HSP programmes are grounded in sports science and performance methodologies aiming to improve function and strength.
HOW IS APEX NEURO DIFFRENT?
Our team is made up of the UK's most experienced Neufit (Neubie) practitioners as the first to bring this technology into the country. Many of our clients have tried similar approaches before but find they achieve significantly better outcomes working with us.
We let our results speak, posting daily on our social media channels and regularly sharing results.
-
APEX NEURO does not offer typical therapies such as physiotherapy, and differ from many other practitioners and services, which often:
-
Focus on stretching and tone management without addressing weakness
-
Overlook underlying communication issues between brain and body
-
Rely on basic exercises or lean heavily technologies such as robotics with little carry over into daily life
-
Do not provide education on the fundamentals of maintaining and regaining function and strength, including training and nutrition
-
Assume that little can change because HSP is genetic and progressive
-
Run long programmes spanning many months away from home
-
Do not offer home support, education or autonomy to the individual
We openly discuss programme cost during the consultation, which we offer free of charge as we believe prospective clients should be able to explore their options and ask questions without a paywall. Our remote programme is offered at a cost of £155/month and is designed to offer support and autonomy after / between visits to the clinic.
HOW OUR PROGRAMME WORKS
Our programmes begin with a comprehensive consultation allowing us to learn more about your symptoms and goals, while giving you chance to ask questions about our programmes.
Programmes vary from 2 to 10 day intervals (or weekly sessions for local clients) and are tailored to each individual, keeping appointments to only what is necessary. Our programmes are designed around education, giving clients the tools and knowledge to progress outside of the clinic.
After the first intensive, as needed, clients return for subsequent (often shorter) intensives and often engage with the Remote Support programme.
Our approach:
-
Delivered by a UK-leading team in the use of Neufit (Neubie) technology for neurological rehabilitation
-
Proven results for clients with HSP
-
A team that brings extensive sport and performance knowledge to HSP rehabilitation, with an outlook focused on what is possible rather than what isn’t
-
A specialist approach that combines multiple advanced technologies
-
Strategically designed intensive programmes built for neurological conditions (tailored to each individual), followed by ongoing support to maintain and build on progress (details on our Remote Support Programme here)
Unlike many programmes, we do not ask clients to be away from home for long periods, for good reasons:
-
Being away from home for long periods adds significant strain to the individual and family, we want to minimise stress to improve outcomes.
-
Long stays are often costly and impact on daily life.
-
We simply do not need the same duration to achieve results.
Our Remote Support Programme has been purpose-built to bridge the gap between intensives and help clients maintain progress.
Important: we are not treating the underlying genetic condition. Your starting point will determine realistic outcomes and responses, and results vary. We require dedication and work from the client, and will only work with clients who are willing to take responsibility for the factors needed for success outside of the sessions. This is a team effort.
WHAT CLIENTS SAY
"I’ve just come back from a three-day intensive at Apex Neuro, following an introductory session three months ago, and I would like to thank Luke and the whole team at Apex Neuro from the bottom of my heart. After years of misdiagnoses and searching for answers, I was finally diagnosed with HSP in September 2025. Since then, although the medical professionals I’ve seen have been well-meaning, the focus has largely been on managing my symptoms with medication and preparing me for what I was told was an inevitable decline in my condition. I was encouraged to use a cane and, in many ways, to accept that things would continue to get worse.
This left me feeling fearful and resigned, particularly after a fall that left me injured. I had lost confidence in my ability to walk safely and, more importantly, hope that things could actually improve for me.
After spending three days with Luke and the team last week, I feel like I have that hope back.
The work we did with the e-stim machine, together with Luke’s incredibly helpful advice on walking technique and how to approach my training at the gym, has given me hope that things can still change for the better.
For the first time in a long while, I can genuinely imagine the possibility of walking unaided and without fear. I know it won’t happen overnight, and I’m fully aware that it will take time, consistency and effort. But I feel motivated and ready to give it everything I can.
I’ve already purchased an e-stim machine for home use and have started putting Luke’s recommendations into practice at the gym. I know there is still work to do, but I’m incredibly grateful to Luke and the entire Apex Neuro team for helping me see that the road ahead doesn’t have to be one of inevitable decline.
Thank you Apex Neuro for giving me back the belief that I can still work (and walk!) towards a better future!"
"Over the past year Apex Neuro has completely changed my life. I had been diagnosed with a rare degenerative neuro disability, known as Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia.
Over the course of four roughly week long intensives, Luke has provided me dedicated support and impact, including helping my brain communicate with my leg muscles again. They had been constantly on a high spasticity, with my knees locking in, losing balance and living with the reality of falling, or fear of falling. Through the uniqueness of their electrical stimulant work, and then further strengthening these muscles through exercise and gym work, the change in my gait, balance and walk is incredible. Over the last year Apex Neuro has given me hope. It’s also provided life changing results.
I remember starting my journey with them by being personally struck by a small picture that hung on my practitioner’s door handle, which read “It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.” It’s a quote that’s supposedly from Walt Disney. But it’s a daily way of life for these guys, and a joint effort that I’ve out worked with them. Through their professional help, their ongoing support and Luke’s experience and skills, this Walt Disney quote has now been a made true in my life. What seemed impossible is now reality. Walking is straight, steady and focused. Jogging might even be a possibility. Journeys don’t have to be fearful. Experiences can be grasped. And, just like Walt Disney said, it was kind of fun along the way too!!"
