Post-Stroke Rehabilitation: Using Cutlery
Post-Stroke Rehab: Using Cutlery
Since Janine started at APEX NEURO, she’s achieved a lot - regaining the ability to tie her shoe laces, fasten an underwire bra, use buckles and zips, put headbands in her hair (so, finally, the wind isn’t blowing her hair into her face on her dog walks!). She’s got significantly improved range of motion, muscle control and less pain, and now is able to use the gym alongside her weekly rehab at APEX NEURO. With her fine motor skills improving, Laura helps Janine with her next goal - using cutlery. This not only involves good dexterity in the fingers, but also the pressure / strength to be able to pierce the fork through the food.
Previously, Janine’s upper body and hands experienced extreme tightness which prevented her having control in the muscle. Laura and Janine have now got this under control, so they can begin teaching her fine motor skills that will make daily life easier and improve her independence. One they achieve using the first fork confidently, they move onto the next level - testing this process with numerous forks progressively getting harder. Janine needs to be prepared to use any type of cutlery (which comes in a very wide variety of styles, weights, sizes etc). This muscle control will carry over into lots of fine motor skills beyond just using cutlery, but we love to work on specific daily-life goals as markers of real progress.
