Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) - walking unaided and regaining speech during an intensive week with APEX NEURO
Functional Neurological Disorder Rehabilitation at APEX NEURO
From 150 to Over 3,000 Steps “You’ve not walked that far in a year.”
Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) rehab at APEX NEURO - walking unaided and regaining speech during an intensive week with APEX NEURO. After a very successful start to their week, where Ben walked completely unaided without his crutches for the first time in a year (a video of this is a little scroll back on our page for those who want to see this incredible moment), it was time to things to the next level. We are big believers in “real-world rehab”. The clinic is a fantastic, ‘controlled environment’ to practice and build confidence, but life is made up of obstacles, distractions, different surfaces and more. Rob and Ben both felt ready to take this on after great progress on the days leading up to this.
At the top of the stairs, after his Rocky Balboa moment, you can see how much this means to Ben. Just yesterday, he had walked without any support, and today he just climbed a big flight of outdoor steps - which is a really positive indicator for what’s possible. No initial first big walk is bound to be perfect, and Rob is keen to instil into Ben how perfectly rational and normal it is to stop, regroup and continue.
The whole while, Rob is on-hand to check and guide Ben - its been over a year since he walked this far, so support and education is key during this training. From using crutches on the flat clinic floor to walking in a sloping forest just a day later - this is the kind of progress we never lose amazement of, especially as so many of our FND clients have tried countless unsuccessful things before working with us.
