Multiple Sclerosis - Drop Foot & Walking Unaided
Erin worked with Jackie over several weekly sessions, primarily focusing on foot drop, hamstring engagement and subsequent changes that were caused by reduced control in her muscles, which impacted Jackie’s gait, balance and confidence. After a few weeks, Jackie had much better control of her hamstring and stronger dorsiflexion (you can watch this progress on our page), so it was time to put these into action. When Jackie started, she often locked her leg while walking, and had to navigate around drop foot. Like many clients she walked “on a tightrope”.
Erin’s biggest focus for their session is “soft knees.” This helps engage the quads and the glutes, and stop Jackie swinging the leg. They no longer have to worry about the drop foot, and can focus on engaging the correct muscles to get the most stable gait. They’re able to transition from the smooth clinic floor, onto the carpet (often our clients find textured surfaces harder to walk on) and Jackie takes it all in her stride - literally!
