Multiple Sclerosis: Getting in and out of the car (Canada to the UK for intensive MS rehab)

Multiple Sclerosis - Getting Into The Car Leanne visited APEX NEURO from Canada for a 10 day intensive, with the primarily goal to improve her walking (particularly at long distances) and find day to day tasks, like getting into the car, easier.

After lots of great work from both of them throughout the first week, getting the foundational work done including working through spasticity, improving connection to the muscles, walking rehab inside and outside etc, they were able to start honing in on some of Leanne’s more specific goals. For Leanne, having a taller car makes getting in and out even more challenging, putting more emphasis on the need for certain lower body muscles to work more efficiently and effectively.

Laura’s attention to detail here helps this session be more true to life - finding the exact height Leanne’s car is off the ground to practice like-for-like getting up to the seat and using a chair to replicate the process of getting her leg up into the footwell.

After nearly 2 weeks of work and improvement, Leanne’s quickly surprised at how much she’s finding the process before Laura starts giving feedback and can see the results are already paying off. Nevertheless, Laura gives specific pointers (such as dorsiflexing or focusing more into the hips) to help make this process all the smoother. Leanne puts it beautifully - it’s getting around s**t - the everyday processes that MS makes more difficult, but are a key goal for us! But we aim to make those processes as easy as possible. Leanne will continue the hard work back home in Canada via our Remote Support Programme.
