Multiple Sclerosis - Athlete Learning to Walk Again Paul travelled from Belgium to work with APEX NEURO with a primary goal (to stand longer independently) - we didn’t just achieve this initial goal, we were able to set another! 🏆 Having spent his younger years playing basketball, Paul is used to living a very active life. However, progression of Multiple Sclerosis symptoms means he now uses a wheelchair full time. Using e-stim to improve the communication between his brain and body, Paul was able to progress to standing unaided for 16 minutes. With practice, he becomes more comfortable, making adjustments to keep himself stood steadily, even able to hold a conversation with Rob - and some dancing! With this progress, it was clear they needed to reassess his goals! Rob starts by breaking down the mechanics of walking for Paul. When a client has reduced or lost the voluntary control of their muscles, providing this information is an important step. Rob then works on the specific areas of weakness that will be contributing to the difficulties when walking, coaching Paul so he understands why those muscles are needed and the overarching plan. They continue to work on the standing throughout - Paul being able to stand comfortably and confidently will greatly contribute to his walking. An exciting step forward!
