Multiple Sclerosis - Breaking Through Spasticity
Spasticity (one of the most common Multiple Sclerosis symptoms APEX NEURO works with): how we 'break through' extreme tightness and restriction to unlock improved movement and muscle control
Spasticity is the limiter, not the ceiling.
In sport science terms, spasticity is a neural “brake” on a system that may have more capacity than it can express. When the brake is reduced, previously 'locked' muscle control becomes 'unlocked' and available to train.
Why do we work on spasticity first?
By reducing spasticity first, especially when working with Multiple Sclerosis, we often begin to uncover more movement control and capacity that was hidden previously. because everything else, including strength, range of motion and movement quality, is built on it. The principle is to unlock one area, then use it to unlock the next - starting by reducing the tightness, we can then assess movement potential, and work on improving the voluntary muscle control with the help of direct current electrical stimulation.
As many of our clients know, our ethos is to 'treat clients as athletes'. As with any athlete, you need to identify imbalances. Imbalances are often incredibly common in Multiple Sclerosis and other conditions affecting nerve function as the signals to one side of the body are often impacted. By reducing the restriction that often comes with spasticity, we can begin to work on improving better balance between the left-right sides of the body.
APEX NEURO uses direct current stimulation (Neubie) in clinic and a handheld device for home use through the Remote Support Programme. Reducing spasticity often if the first stage of an intensive or in-clinic programme especially for MS clients. Our clients on Remote Support can use the home device to manage spasticity at home, including at night.
