Breaking Through Spasticity

“I think, though, even that small amount of movement is more than what I’ve done for however many years” Laura and Rob had been using a specific type of e-stim to work through spasticity which was limiting Rob’s range of motion, and increase his control in his leg muscles.

They’ve reached the point of working on the hip flexors (Laura’s favourite), which are used in walking/running, climbing stairs, bending forwards and posture/stability. Rob’s legs were stiff and had a high level of spasticity, so Laura set to work engaging the leg through the use of electric and by moving it into specific positions. Rob’s leg wants to fight back as it hasn’t been used like this in some time, but Laura persists and they’re able to learn and achieve a lot as a result. Rob is able to begin lifting his leg to his chest without Laura moving it there, first with the electricity and later without it, improving his independent control.

However, Laura identifies that Rob’s quads are far stronger than his hips and hamstrings, and they want to switch on and overpower when this new, unfamiliar movement takes place. They know now going forward which muscles need more attention to address these imbalances.
