Following HSCT, one of the primary MS symptoms Ashley has experienced is aggressive spasticity in her legs. She experiences sudden jerking movements, kicking out and locking her legs, stiffness and spasms, which impacts her mobility, balance and sleep.
Working together in the clinic on our intensive Multiple Sclerosis programme, and diligently at home on our Remote Support programme, her overall spasticity is reducing including at night, so she is getting more restful sleep.
Multiple Sclerosis Spasticity - Regaining Control
Rob and Ashley focus on her spasticity as this has been a block to her standing as the sudden jerk and spasms can throw her off balance, and the tightness in her muscles make it hard for her to engage the correct muscles to stand.
As they work, her muscles start to release, which allows Rob to teach her how to engage the muscles to lift and lower her feet, without her body fighting back. This is the foundation for stepping - walking unaided is a goal we are working towards.
Ashley is a star pupil on our remote programme, and since joining has begun to use the stairs again! We will continue the work started together on her intensive at home, including reinforcing the new lifting and lowering of the foot.
