Multiple Sclerosis - Spasticity, Reflexes & Dorsiflexion
We love being able to capture the moments where we see the change people have been hoping for - sometimes for years. (A small note - filming is not a mandatory part of working with us — but all the moments we do get to capture means a lot to our team and all the people who watch our videos and find hope in seeing these changes and achievements!) During her first visit, Lorraine wasn’t able to achieve dorsiflexion and her ankle and foot were stuck in a position that made walking incredibly difficult. Luke was determined to get to the bottom of this.
Using an electrically-conductive glove, Luke is stimulating nerves in Lorraine’s foot which previously had very limited response. Most often, there was a spasticity reflex (this also happened when touched without electric) but Lorraine had very limited voluntary control in her toes.
This time, as they’re working on her feet, Lorraine starts being able to bend and extend her big toe. They also start to see a marked reduction in the spasticity reflex. Finally, they are able to achieve dorsiflexion - a huge step towards improved walking as Lorraine needs to be able to independently lift her foot to take steps. Patience and expertise go hand-in-hand, especially when there has been significant progression in MS symptoms — change takes time! However, big moments like this are exciting for all of us, and who knows - maybe Lorraine will be able to start getting pedicures again…?!
