Real-world MS rehab: learning to use stairs and walk up and down hills again
”Even a few months ago, there’s no way I would have been able to walk down that slope”
Why do we believe in real-world Multiple Sclerosis rehab? Because life doesn’t take place in a controlled environment - we need to be able to tackle stimuli in the environment, wind, noise, changes in surface, hills, stairs etc. Once a client is ready, getting out into the real world is a key part of ‘stress-testing’ and making sure the skills and strength we built in the clinic also works on a day to day basis out in the real world. As much as we love out wonderful, hand-crafted stairs in the clinic which is a great base for teaching someone how to use the stairs again, in the real world stairs are uneven - there is different (or no) support/handles - we need to practice all of this.
We also need to navigate stimuli that can be distracting, stressful or cause our body to need to work in a different way such as wind or crossing a road.
This can only come with practice - so Erin takes Gemma out on a windy UK day so they can practice real world obstacles, including stairs and speed bumps!
