Multiple Sclerosis - Training with MS and re-building strength
After a few days of e-stim focused work in the APEX NEURO clinic during Troyd’s 5-day intensive, on day 4 Erin took Troyd into the gym to teach him methods to improve mind-muscle connection and build strength at home. Erin is selecting kit in the gym that’s designed to best recruit the muscles they need to build strength in. As this is new to Troyd, they begin without weight so Erin can give feedback on form before they start advancing to using weight. Erin tells Troyd “power up, squeeze” — it’s not just about moving the weight, it’s about learning to use the muscle most effectively. Once they are confident, it’s time to add weight.
Many of our Multiple Sclerosis clients aren’t familiar with this method of training, or it’s been a long time since they trained (some have never used the gym) and it can be daunting. Part of the skill of our team is their experience in coaching and helping people learn these methods, so they can continue confidently at home. We are aiming for a balance - we want to challenge the client (the resistance / weight is acting as a stimulus over time to help build strength and muscle mass) while maintaining good form and being able to get a solid amount of reps.
