Falkland Islands to UK: Multiple Sclerosis Intensive Rehabilitation

Re-learning to stand with Multiple Sclerosis: Cyndi travels from the Falkland Islands to the UK (a distance of ~8,000 miles) to work with APEX NEURO intensively. There is no questioning this incredible woman’s determination! However, sometimes her mind gets in the way — she’s spent a long time ‘failing’ and movements like getting up from being seated have become increasingly more challenging as the MS has progressed. This can often mean she doubts herself, especially when attempting something difficult or things she’s been unable to do for a significant time.

Working with Multiple Sclerosis means understanding both the mechanical and physiological challenges, as well as the psychological aspects of living with a degenerative condition - and how to differentiate between these two challenges. Rob has spent time improving Cyndi’s muscle control in the areas that are needed for this movement and is confident she’s now ready to start putting this into action.

When Cyndi hits the ‘wall’ a simple change in how Rob approaches the session makes a huge difference - by gradually practicing getting up from a higher seated position means Cyndi gets ‘data’ and enforcement that she is able to do it, and Rob can gradually expose her to the lower and harder seating position. Part of our role is to understand how to coach different people, with different personalities and barriers. It’s not a one-size-fits-all when it comes to getting the best results.
