Multiple Sclerosis - Real-World Rehab PART 2 - Uneven Surfaces
Multiple Sclerosis - Real-World Rehab - Part 2 “This is what I’ve always wanted to do.”
Like many of our clients, Gaynor watched our videos before she decided to work with us, seeing our team take people out into the real world as part of our rehab process. This is the moment she gets to experience just how hard this part truly is but also to take a moment to feel so proud of the progress she’s made to get to this point. In Part 1, Luke had started to coach Gaynor through real-world rehab for her MS, taking the work they’d done improving her walking and applying it to an outdoor setting, which is full of obstacles and distractions. Here in Part 2, they’ve reached the canal and it’s time to navigate a new set of challenges. Firstly, the cobbled path makes Gaynor become tense - it’s texture makes it easier to lose your footing. However, Luke helps Gaynor implement extra measures to increase her stability and safety, such as increasing the width of her stance/walk and keeping a bend in the knee. When the path gets more difficult, it’s perfectly rational to go a little slower and adapt accordingly. As they continue on, one of the factors that Luke and Gaynor acknowledges is the open nature of this path. With no rails or walls, walking in spaces like a canal path can feel unnerving, as though there’s nothing to prevent a fall. However, Luke is on-hand to consistently advise guidance or intervene should this look like it might happen. The more they practice along this path (you can see how far Gaynor has gone by looking in the background of the video - the cobbled path can’t even be seen any more), the more fluid she begins to get. While MS fatigue can definitely impact walking, practice really helps. She starts to gain a rhythm and some good momentum - which is what everyone wants to feel when they’re walking.
