Multiple Sclerosis Rehab - Building Muscle Control

Jo came back for her second intensive with APEX NEURO after achieving some big goals during the first visit (standing independently for over 6 minutes!) Previously, Erin had worked on the muscles important for sit-to-stands and remaining stable when stood up, and Jo, who usually uses a wheelchair, was able to stand unaided for 6 minutes 👏 (followed by some happy tears!)

This time, Erin is focusing on building improved engagement and control in the muscles that are important for standing and walking. The hip flexors (which are very often affected is Multiple Sclerosis), initially had limited movement and minimal control. After working through spasticity (which was limiting the range of motion and ability to engage the muscle voluntarily) and some coaching on movement, Jo begins to regain a connection to the muscle.

With practice, she can begin engaging the hips to move the leg up, holding the leg in place, and carefully lowering it down. When it comes to movements like walking or using stairs, this kind of control is key. Jo now has the tools to be able to do these movements at home - we want our clients to be improving in and out of the clinic, so having taught Jo what she should be doing and what feeling she should be looking for, she can continue to build up strength, connection and control.
